Colleges to settle scores?

To assure that colleges don’t exaggerate marks in the first cutoff list, the Delhi University will do a more comprehensive and detailed analysis of the data they receive from applicants this year and help colleges decide a score frame in which they can set their cutoffs.

Officials from the university on Friday said that though they always analysed the data before it went to colleges, this time they will be more thorough and will look at other factors, apart from the marks, as well. “The data will first be uploaded on servers and thoroughly analysed. The analysis will include several stages. The total number of applications will be vetted. We will then observe as to who has applied to what course on the basis of marks candidates have attained. Though not a 100 per cent accurate, a conclusion will be drawn regarding what the candidates are most likely to opt for,” said an official from the Dean of Students’ Welfare (DSW) office. According to the university, this will help them roughly gauge the behavioral patterns of students as to which students will be more likely to apply for which course. “It will increase more accuracy in cutoff lists as earlier many colleges didn’t have a single admission in the first cutoff list. We don’t want this to happen,” said Malay Neerav, media coordinator and Joint Dean of Students’ Welfare.

Apart from this, colleges will also have to upload the details of candidates who have been admitted into the college online. This will help people know what the scenario of admission in each college is. A few university sources said that it is likely that by the second or third cutoff list, it will be clear as to who has got into the university.
