While a number of unused toilet complexes in South Delhi are likely to be converted into milk and vegetable shops, the South Corporation is to come up with first-of-its-kind effort to build eco-friendly toilets in the capital, which is already a success in Chennai known as Namma toilets.

"These 20 toilets will come up by next month. Around 10 toilets will be built this month, 10 others will be constructed next month," said an official.

These toilets are completely eco-friendly with facility of solar lights. In this mode, fixtures are created in form of separate units. They are made from damage-free fixtures and weather-proof structure.  Every toilet will have one for specially challenged, two for ladies and three units for gents are created at a cost of 14 lakhs.

"Under Swatch Bharat mission the SDMC is making 94 new toilets under CSR with PSUs and other Government organisations. Operation and Maintenance is transferred to Market associations and RWAs for better control and management. All the toilets- CTCs and Urinals in SDMC are repaired during this year to give better civic facility to public," SDMC Mayor Subhash Arya said.

When Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched, the three corporations not only promised to build new toilets, but also decided to renovate the earlier ones. While the new ones are yet to come up, the existing ones are hardly used owing to its dilapidated condition.

Meanwhile, the other unused toilet complexes South Delhi may soon be converted into milk and vegetable shops, among other uses, as the local municipal corporation's ambitious plans for the facilities have gone down the drain. The unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi had in March 2010 proposed building of 216 air-conditioned high-end toilet-cum-commercial complexes before the Commonwealth Games.
