With the election process coming to an end in the national Capital, civic bodies have sprung back to action. To start with, the South and the North Delhi Municipal Corporations have cracked the whip on unscrupulous builders and have launched a massive demolition drive against unauthorised constructions.
The SDMC has already demolished over 50 such buildings, including over a dozen in the posh Sainik Farms area, while the NMC carried out the same in Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk and other areas.
With builders getting a free run until the elections as the Model Code of Conduct was in effect, the rate of unauthorised construction increased by manifold in the past few months, claims the civic body. Responding to this irregularity, the SDMC in the past 15 days has been on a spree to either demolish or seal any illegal structure falling within its jurisdiction. The South Corporation, so far, has demolished 53 buildings out of which 15 were located in Sainik Farms area. Two each were decimated in Panchsheel Enclave, Harijan Basti and Mandi Village.
"This major demolition drive lends a fresh perspective against unauthorised construction in different areas. Our intention is to spread a message to builders indulging in such illegal activities that they must strongly believe in Government protocols and respect the laws of the SDMC as well. Such builders are likely to get jitters now as we will further intensify our drive," informed an official. On Wednesday, the SDMC demolished six properties and sealed five others.
On Wednesday, the NMC too demolished illegal portions of 13 properties in Mori Gate, Karol Bagh, Chawri Bazar, Ajmeri Gate and Chandni Chowk.
