In yet another incident of celebratory firing culminating in a tragedy, a 12-year-old girl was killed after she was accidentally hit by a bullet during a wedding ceremony in West Delhi’s Ranhola on Wednesday night. Police have arrested the groom’s father and recovered the double barrel gun from his possession. The incident took place at Baprola village in Ranhola on Wednesday night. Divya was dancing close to the groom’s stallion. People were dancing to the drumbeat when they heard a gunshot,” said a police officer, adding, “Within moments, their attention was drawn towards Divya slumped to the ground. She was hit in the flank and was bleeding profusely.”

She was rushed to Ayushman Hospital in Dwarka where she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday evening. Police was informed and a squad sent to vet the crime scene. The victim’s parents claimed they were not near their daughter when tragedy struck. Police questioned several family members and also sought footage of the wedding being filmed by a videographer. “The wedding video has no footage of the celebratory gunfire. Following sustained investigation, we identified the accused — Sushil Vats — and arrested him from his house. He happens to be the groom’s father,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Pushpendra Kumar.
