Cases of snatching, land grabbing and daylight robbery have increased in New Delhi’s Jamia Nagar, according to residents. The latest victim has been 22-year-old student Shadaab Saeed, said police. Eyewitnesses said two bike-borne youths in South East Delhi’s Batla House shot at Shadaab on Thursday midnight when he resisted their mobile snatching bid.

The latest incident in a series of many has left many residents stumped and blame game has begun with Okhla’s AAP MlA Amanatullah Khan holding police responsible for failing to enforce law and order in the locality that a few months ago was peaceful.

Shockingly the incident took place just a few meters from Khan’s residence with the incident being captured in a CCTV camera installed at the MlA’s house. On hearing the gunshots, the MlA said he rushed out of his house.

After the incident, Shadaab, who is pursuing a diploma in management from an institute at Nehru Place, was rushed to the Holy Family hospital where his condition is stated to be serious. He received two bullets in his chest, said police officials that reached the spot after being informed.

The investigation has begun and we have gathered CCTV footage, said officials.

Police said the CCTV footage shows Shadaab wearing a grey shirt turning to the corner when the two men on motorcycle tried to snatch his phone. Also, Shadaab is shown in the footage making efforts to convince the snatchers and tries to run away, but one of the robbers opened fire at him.

A case under section 307 IPC (attempt to murder) and robbery has been registered against the men and hunt is on to nab them.
