The Delhi Government on Thursday announced BJP MlA Vijender Gupta as the leader of Opposition in the legislative Assembly. “The decision by the Delhi Government was delayed. But ultimately, it is the victory of democratic rules and values. In future too we will expect the Government to safeguard democratic values,” said Vijender Gupta.

“We, as the Opposition to Delhi Government, will try to bring forth the voice of the public. We will work as the voice of the public. We will be  duty-bound to raise dissent on any  anti-democratic practices. No  compromise will be made on core democratic values,” he added. In a notification, the Delhi Government on Thursday apprised that Gupta will be taking over as the leader of Opposition. The move came after the BJP MlAs wrote to the Delhi Government seeking their decision on the leader of Opposition.

In 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party formed the Government by bagging 67 seats whereas BJP won three, which is less than a tenth of the total strength of 70 of the Delhi Assembly. Jagdish Pradhan, Om Prakash Sharma and Vijender Gupta are the three BJP candidates who won their seats in the Assembly polls.
