Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal was inspired by al-Qaeda chief Osama bin laden and used motivate youngsters into sacrificing their lives in the name of ‘jihad’ via videos of the slain terrorist, NIA has said in its chargesheet filed in a Delhi court.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said Bhatkal had downloaded from the Internet a number of documents, including lectures and videos of Osama and other prominent terrorists, and made young boys go through them. “He (Bhatkal) used to quote selected phrases from Islamic religious books in support of jihad. He had downloaded from Internet a number of documents which portrayed Jihad as an obligatory act of every Muslim. He had also downloaded lectures of Muslim leaders and fighters like Osama bin laden, Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Anwar al-Aulaqi from the Internet. He made young Muslim boys watch these videos and read out these documents to them to motivate them to sacrifice their lives in the name of jihad,” NIA said, adding that all these videos, documents, files have been saved by Bhatkal in his laptop.

These details were disclosed by NIA in its second chargesheet filed in a city court against Mohd Ahmed Siddibapa alias Yasin Bhatkal, his aides Asadullah Akhtar, Manzer Imam and Ujjair Ahmed in connection with a case of alleged conspiracy to carry out terror acts in the country. The court on Monday took cognisance of the chargesheet. In its 277-page chargesheet filed in a court, the NIA said after Yasin and other IM men failed to carry out a series of bomb blasts in July 2008 in Surat and Ahmedabad, they started planning to procure nuclear warheads from Pakistan to nuke Surat.

“The operatives also discussed about targeting Surat, where they had failed to inflict any damage during the attempt in 2008, and now wanted to nuke the city with nuclear warheads if they could be procured from Pakistan,” the NIA said. Referring to the Internet chats between the two top IM operatives on June 1 last year, the probe agency said Yasin had asked Riyaz to procure nuclear bomb in Pakistan.
