BEYOND THE RHETORIC OF DIRTY lAUNDRY

With serious topics like the newly formed Government at the Centre, the Jammu & Kashmir floods and Muzaffarnagar riots making most of the presidential speeches at the JNUSU presidential debate, a few candidates had some controversial ideas to put forward which made the Election Commission intervene asking the candidates to apologise. Though first the candidate from CJD, CS Yadav, made a “casteist” comment regarding the way food was being served in the mess, it was followed by an ABVP candidate, Sourabh Kumar, who termed all the left parties as “terrorists” making special mention of JNU student and Naxal Hem Mishra. However, the CJD candidate apologised, the ABVP candidate stuck to his points and said that he had “nothing to apologise for as Mishra was a terrorist.” The EC has so far not spoken of the action being taken against the candidate.

Kumar in his speech said, “We see lot of leftists in JNU, but what have they given usIJ They have only brought terrorists here. They are linked with anti-national organisations and have been dividing communities.” This was condemned by the Election Commission right away as the audience broke into a frenzy of hate-slogans against the candidate. However, JNUSU Chief Election Commissioner Dilip Maurya said, “There is no action being taken against the candidate. Any further information is not available.”
