Before I-Day police receive 21 prank calls

Continuous bomb threat calls kept the security agencies and the Delhi Police on their toes before the Independence Day. The Delhi Police was tasked to investigate and trace anonymous callers in seven cases, which were reported between August 1 and August 15.

Interestingly, last year, only one such call was received between the same duration. In most of the cases, it was found to be a prank call made for mischief.

In one such call, which was made in the first week of this month, the caller said that a terrorist was hiding at Rithala Metro Station. Similarly, on red line metro going towards Kashmiri Gate from Rohini, an anonymous caller had informed police that he spotted some terrorist inside the metro.

On August 9, somebody informed police that three persons who look like terrorists had abducted him. A call also received on August 10, in which caller said a few terrorists are sitting in a car bearing Punjab registration number.

“The security agencies remain alert and they take every call seriously. We conduct thorough investigation in every case, almost every call found to be hoax,” said a police officer.

According to the police statistics, last year eight such calls were received from January 1 to August 15. This year, the figure has jumped to 21 during the same time. The senior police officer believes that the reason in increase of such hoax calls is due to the recent bombing in the foreign countries.
