The cash van driver and one of his associates — who had fled with Rs 49 lakh on Wednesday — were arrested on Thursday morning from Etah in Uttar Pradesh and the cash was also retrieved. The third accomplice is still on the run.
The 30-year-old accused, identified as Satish Yadav, was working with Cash Management Services (CMS) as a driver under an assumed identity of Sanjay.
On Wednesday morning, when the security guard at the ATM and three employees of Axis Bank were busy loading cash into the machine at Padam Singh Road in Karol Bagh, Satish fled with the cash van.
The Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range), Sandeep Goel, said that the case was cracked within a few hours of the offence as the Central district police teams not only identified the accused, but also tracked him down. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Alok Verma said that Satish had hatched the conspiracy around a month ago with his cousins Shailender and Chhotu. “After Satish fled with the van, the three met at Raigarpura locality in Karol Bagh where they transferred the money into two bags. Satish and Shailender left for Etah on a motorbike while Chhotu boarded a bus,” he added.
After registering the case, a special team of Inspector Satender Mohan and Sub-Inspector Pramod Anand, under the supervision of ACP SK Giri, started probing the matter. “The accused were tracked down with the help of technical surveillance. Satish joined the cash management company on August 31 and had submitted a fake residential address to his office,” the officer said, adding that three other employees — Amit Mishra, Kapil and guard FD Sharma — were with Satish when the cash van left with Rs 83 lakh from Axis Bank’s Jhandewalan branch on Wednesday morning.
Around Rs 5 lakh was put in an ATM in Central Delhi’s Faiz Road area, and as the bank staff readied with Rs 29 lakh to fill the machine, Satish drove away with the rest of the money.
