Medical experts have advised proper caution against the spread of dengue and malaria, given the prevailing weather conditions. They said stagnant water was the main cause of mosquito breeding.

"Water-borne disease like typhoid, cholera and viral hepatitis remain high during the monsoon season. Food poisoning (gastro enteritis) cases are also prevalent. It is recommended to have only boiled and cooled water for drinking. Street food should be avoided and proper hygiene should be maintained," said Dr SP Byotra, senior consultant (medicine) at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

Another physician, Dr Ashok Dhamija said that stagnation of dirty water outside houses should be prevented. "Stagnant water provides atmosphere conducive for mosquito breeding. While symptoms of Malaria are shivering, fever on alternate days coupled with body aches; dengue occurs when a person has high fever, body ache and bleeding due to low count of the blood platelets. However, the symptoms of viral fever, which is the most common in this season, are headache, backache with fluctuating temperature," he said.

"In order to prevent these diseases, it is advisable to remain fully clad. One should wear dry, loose and well-aerated clothes," he added.
