113 riot prone hamlets on radar

The security shield is up for Delhi Assembly polls. The Delhi Police has identified 113 hamlets that are prone to riots and security has been accordingly beefed up to maintain law and order for the coming Assembly polls. Almost 52 people who could stir trouble have been identified by the Special Branch and instructions have been issued to all the 11 police districts to rein in rabble-rousers.

Meanwhile, it has already booked 561 persons under Sections 107/151 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) till Thursday, 58 persons under Sections 107/116 and 85 persons under Sections 109/110 of the CrPC. An estimated 2,163 instigators were bound under various provisions of the Delhi Police Act, 1978. It has executed a non-bailable arrest warrant against the 152 persons while 125 such warrants are still pending with various police stations.

A senior Delhi Police official said that they are keeping the Chief Electoral Office (CEO) of Delhi abreast with the actions taken by the force to contain anti-social elements.

The Delhi Police is working overtime to comply with the orders of the Election Commission (EC) of India following the promulgation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) across the city. The biggest challenge for the police is to take custody of licenced arms and seize illegal arms for ensuring free and fair elections in the city, the official added.

Delhi Police has deposited 786 arms till Thursday from all the 11 police districts. It has also confiscated three live cartridges and three illegal firearms. Initially, the figures supplied by the Delhi Police were pegged at 1,111, which was later rectified, an official working with CEO said. Meanwhile the Special Branch of Delhi Police is continuing with its survey of the sensitive and hyper-sensitive booths and areas and investigators are maintaining surveillance on the activities of rogue elements with any history of mischief, a police official added.
