Air quality remains very poor in city

Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) on Friday recorded in a very poor category with overall AQI recorded 310 micrograms per cubic.

According to SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research), a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), values of Suspended Particulate Matters (SPMs) – Particulate Matters (PM) 10 and 2.5 were recorded at 247 and 133.

In its short-range weather and air quality forecast, SAFAR said, AQI indicated very poor air quality which has degraded from Thursday’s ‘poor’ category due to cloudy conditions and large reduction in mixing layer height.

“For the next two days (10th, 11th), winds are likely to be moderate. Partially cloudy conditions and low mixing layer height (< 1 km) causing weak vertical mixing are likely to keep air quality within ‘very poor’ for today and tomorrow. From December 12 and December 14, air quality is likely to degrade to the upper end of ‘very poor’ due to relatively low wind speeds.”

In a health advisory, SAFAR recommended that stop outdoor activities in the early morning and after sunset. “Avoid prolonged or heavy exertion.

Go for a short walk instead of a jog and take more breaks. Stop any activity level if you experience any unusual coughing, chest discomfort, wheezing, breathing difficulty, or fatigue. If the room has windows, close them.

If the air conditioner provides a fresh air intake option, keep that closed. Avoid burning of wood, candles or incense. Keep the room clean – dont vacuum. Do wet mopping to reduce dust.Masks known as N-95 or P-100 respirators may only help if you go out,” it said.
