Gearing up for the lok Sabha polls, the ruling BJP in the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) announced a slew of development work, particularly health infrastructure besides listing its achievements during its regime. Senior leaders of the Corporation on Wednesday said a number of hospitals and dispensaries and one medical and engineering college each will be opened soon. At the same time, they also promised improvement in sanitation services, education and parking facilities to its people.

Addressing a joint Press conference, North Delhi Mayor Azad Singh, Standing Committee chairman Mohan Bhardwaj and leader of House Mira Aggarwal said a 100-bed hospital would soon be opened at Kanjhawala in Outer Delhi, which aims at strengthening medical facilities in rural areas. The civic body plans to open another medical college at Rajan Babu TB Hospital where 79 acres of land is available for the purpose. The NMC has already proposed an engineering college in its budget for the year 2014-15. From March 6, the civic body, in collaboration with AIIMS, will launch Stri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana wherein women living in urban slums and other vulnerable areas would be screened for five major cancers, namely breast, cervix, gall bladder, ovary and uterus. In addition to this, the civic body plans to develop public conveniences for women at 48 locations.

Meanwhile, the leaders accused the previous Congress-led Delhi Government of trifurcating the unified MCD and alleged that no financial assistance was given to the newly formed civic bodies as promised earlier. They said the Delhi Government owed Rs 792 crore to the NMC but the Government gave the same amount as loan to the Corporation instead of monetary grant. In the budget, leaders said, the monthly pension to the aged and the widows has also been increased to Rs 1,200 per month from Rs 1,000 per month.
