After 100% cut-offs, second list offers little succor

The cut-off percentages for admission to popular courses in Delhi University did not show any remarkable plunge in its second list announced on Sunday.

Eleven of the 21 colleges offering BTech in Computer science were closed for admission in the general category, while the drop in the cut-off in others was marginal. The cut-off percentage in Ram lal Anand College — which came into the limelight after keeping 100 per cent cut-off for admissions in Computer Science course, also shows no drop in the cut-off percentage. The cut-off marks for Science stream in RlA remained at 95 percent, said Vijay K Kumar, Principal of RlA College.

Earlier, the Principal had said that the reason for the high cut-off was the University guidelines which prescribed a difference of five per cent between two streams.

The second list holds a ray of hope for many students as the colleges still keep the admissions open for some course although the cut-offs have marginally been decreased to avoid the havoc of over-admissions. Sri Ram College of Commerce which was reported of having fast filling in Economics, have chosen to close admissions for its Commerce course, while as Economics is open with a dip by 0.25 per cent.

Same is for the other leading colleges like the Miranda House while as Hindu, lady Sri Ram College (lSR) and Hans Raj College have come down by two points of the minimum aggregate of the earlier list. For Commerce, while lSR has dropped its cut-off by one per cent, Hindu College and KMC has dropped it by 0.25 per cent. Colleges like Deen Dayal, IP College, Kamla Nehru and Gargi College have closed admissions in Commerce, the option at Hans Raj College, lSR, Hindu and Kirorimal still remains open. "The marginal drop is because colleges will try to be cautious. As the FYUP system is to be followed, the workload of one department will be on others as well. Thus, the cut-offs have been played on with a proper plan," said Kanica Khandelwal, media coordinator of lSR.

For the much-sought-after English course, the cut-offs have fairly been relaxed, Hans Raj College has recorded a drop of six marks, lSR and Hindu show a drop of three marks and Miranda House of two marks. The course remains open at colleges like KMC, DDU, RlA and Shivaji College, while around 10 other colleges have capped it.

Gargi College, which had witnessed crowds running the admission list up, has already closed admissions to majority of the courses. For many Science courses, the cut-off marks have been reduced quite a bit, giving a breather to the aspirants. Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Science, Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Hans Raj College and Miranda House still have admissions open for Computer Science.
