Around 100 Delhi Police personnel, including women officers, gathered outside the force headquarters on Monday morning demanding the rollback of two transfers ordered after a confrontation between police and lawyers at Shahdara police station.
Holding placards and posters, the protesters asked that Assistant Commissioner of Police Manasvi Vashistha and Shahdara Station House Officer Inspector Arun Kumar be reinstated to their previous postings.
The row dates to October 23, when advocate Lalit Bansal allegedly suffered a serious head injury during a scuffle inside the police station. Lawyers at the district court went on an indefinite strike after a confrontation between advocates and personnel at the station.
On October 28, Delhi Police transferred Vashistha, then sub-divisional police officer in Gandhi Nagar, to the Special Police Unit for Women and Children, and moved Inspector Kumar to the security unit.
ACP Vashistha told reporters the protest was an "organic call" and that he was joining it. The personnel alleged misbehaviour and threats by lawyers.
"We have taken a stand because it is necessary to raise our voice against the hooliganism that the police are facing and the security problems arising inside police stations," he said.
He added that the personnel had filed a written request for a platform to place their views before senior officers, and had proposed that a dialogue with the Police Commissioner be broadcast online.
Senior officers monitored the mobilisation, with district deputy commissioners reportedly asked to ensure that their staff did not take part. The lawyers called off their strike after the transfers.
