AAP's 'lethargy' to blame for NGT ban on overaged vehicles: BJP

Staff Reporter

Terming AAP Government’s “lethargy” responsible for NGT ban on plying more than 10-year-old Diesel vehicles, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay said that party leaders will meet Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to discuss the issue along with the delegation of the transporters. A delegation of small transporters of Delhi met Upadhyay on Monday at the party’s Delhi office and apprised him of the problems — including those of their livelihood and shortage in the supply of fruits, vegetables and other essential commodities — arising out of the ban on plying 10-year-old diesel vehicles.

Upadhyay blamed that the Kejriwal Government’s lethargy led to NGT ban on old diesel vehicles as this Government did not submit before the NGT the fact that Supreme Court had already fixed 15 years as the life of diesel commercial vehicles in Delhi. In this situation, the order of NGT is contradictory. Assuring the transporters of full cooperation of the Delhi BJP, Upadhyay said that he would soon meet the Union Transport Minister along with the delegation of the transporters.

Moreover, heeding to the plea of the Delhi Government, the NGT on Monday stayed for two weeks its order to impound diesel vehicles, heavy or light, plying in the Capital for more than 10 years. The Green Bench also sought rationalisation of parking charges to encourage people to use parking facilities so that they do not park on roads. The matter was mentioned before the tribunal by Advocate Zubeida Begum, appearing for the Delhi Government.
