The Aam Aadmi Party may not have won majority in the Delhi Assembly polls, but its splendid performance has certainly escalated the number of volunteers for the party. Within 48 hours, the AAP has enrolled nearly 10,000 people, who thronged the party office to extend their support and become a member.
“In the last two days we have registered over 9,000 people, who showed interest in joining and working for the nation selflessly. The number of volunteers has tremendously gone up,” said an AAP member and help-desk in-charge DD Sharma, who continuously signed registration slips taking Rs10 from each person.
The AAP, which has become a rage among the youth within a year of its birth, has signed up around 15 lakh people since its inception. However, the speed of registration has considerably increased after the poll result, which led to a hung Assembly with the AAP sweeping 28 out of the 70 seats.
“It has strengthened my confidence in the party. Earlier we used to hesitate in openly supporting them thinking they might not do well but their performance has completely changed my mind,” said Sachin, a businessman from Karol Bagh.
“I want to work actively for the party. By becoming a member of this party I will be able to take care of my area. If there is any problem, I can directly approach the concerned party members,” said Rizwan Siddiqui, a medical store owner who came from Mustafabad to get himself registered with the AAP.
The party workers, who have been registering the supporters, said that they had to increase their number of help desks after December 8. “Since the announcement of results, the office is flooded with people who wish to be a member of the party. We were earlier attending them at one table, but now there are 10 of them lined up and all have long queues,” said a party worker.
