AAP lifts yoke of crop loss from farmers' necks

Staff Reporter

In a bid to fulfil its promise of compensation to the farmers who lost their crops due to the unseasonal rain, Delhi Government will start the distribution of cheques from Bawana in the national Capital from Friday. The scheme titled Gajendra Singh Kisan Sahayata Yojana will be launched by the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday afternoon. Delhi Cabinet had on May 1 approved the name of the scheme and the formula for payment of compensation to the farmers.

It has been decided that farmers whose complete crop has been destroyed will be paid Rs20,000 per acre (in cases of crop loss of 70 per cent and above). In cases where the crop loss will be assessed below 70 per cent, the farmers will get a minimum compensation of Rs14,000 per acre. Therefore, the compensation for farmers suffering from crop loss due to unseasonal rain has been divided into two slabs of Rs20,000 per acre and Rs14,000 per acre. It has also been decided that any dispute arising between Government officials and farmers on the quantum of crop loss will be resolved in the respective Gram Sabha nearest to the land of the affected farmers. The compensation scheme is for farmers and corporate entities owning land in Delhi will not get the benefit of this scheme.
