After introducing a well-equipped resource centre for the benefit of visually-challenged students at Sri Ram College of Commerce, there are efforts to motivate morale of such students by awarding one deserving candidate with a ‘gift of his/her own choice’ every year.
The first student to get this award is Karan Singhania from BCom Honours third year, who asked for a voice recorder with multiple options for getting audio support. “The idea behind this initiative is to encourage students to work hard and inculcate competitive attitude to bring out real capabilities,” said PC Jain, principal of SRCC.
“The college enrolls around 10 to 12 students with partial or full visual imapairity every year. They are equally capable of working hard but need a push and support from society. As an educational institute, it is our responsibility to do the least we can to benefit them,” he added.
“I have made a committee to check overall performance in sports, academics and extra-curricular activities of such students and in the third year, nominate them for the award of their own choice. The will be recognised in front of the whole college during the annual day of the college,” he said.
Singhania expressed happiness on getting the award and said he wanted all students facing such problems to positively join Science and Commerce stream than just Arts courses.
“I have seen visually impaired people pursuing Arts courses thinking that other courses will be difficult. This is not true I want them to come out and explore as there are institutes like ours who are friendly enough to help us. The people in job market also have a notion that we can’t work but I want to give out a message to them that we are also employable,” he said. “I can record lectures and books read by other people through the device. It has special features where I can convert audio books into daisy format,” he added.
