The tragic death of 75-year-old woman due to falling of the ceiling of nursing home of Ram Manohar lohia (RMl) has put the hospital administration in a tight spot.

The incident took place on August 29. But the hospital authorities said the woman died due to her illness. The deceased, identified as Abheed Devi, is the mother of a political leader from Rashtriya lok Samta Party.

According to sources, the patient died on Tuesday due to the negligence of the hospital authorities. “The patient was recovering well after the surgery. She died of head injury, which was caused due to the fallen ceiling. Moreover, no proper treatment was offered to her,” said the source.

According to the RMl official, the patient was admitted to the hospital on August 14 for the operation of chronic disease. She was shifted to the private nursing home department in a general room on August 27 where the ceiling of the room had fallen on her head.  “The patient survived after minor injuries on her head. She died due to her critical illness,” said RMl spokesperson Dr. VK Sinha.

However, the post-mortem reports are still awaited to ascertain the exact reason for the death, he added.

The hospital authorities claim that the entire building of the centre-run RMl hospital is in ruins and needs immediate attention. Every year, hospital pays huge chunk of money to the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for the maintenance and construction work, but nothing remarkable is seen till now. “We give over rs 27 crore to the CPWD for the maintenance work in the campus, but no satisfactory is work has been done till date,” said Dr. Sinha.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased has lodged an FIR in the Mandir Marg police station against the hospital staff for the negligence in dealing with the patient.

However, this is not the first incident in the Government hospitals where laxity has been observed. Earlier, in the month of July, a one-month-old baby was denied admission in RMl and Kalavati Saran Children’s hospital for not having emergency ventilator which led to the death of the infant.
