India has become a medical hub for foreign tourists. In a recent case, a 60 year old Fijian woman who suffered restricted movement due to rheumatoid arthritis and fracture walked on her feet after being operated at a hospital in Delhi.
According to the doctors who operated her, there was a fracture around her knees which was overlooked by the doctors who operated her in Fiji. Mayawati, a Fijian woman of Indian origin was bedridden for more than a year. She was admitted to Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) recently.
“When Mayawati came to us, she was in poor condition. Upon examination, it was found that the fracture sustained around her knee had caused severe deformity in that region and the ligaments were not functioning optimally,” said Dr Vivek Mahajan, Consultant, Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy Surgeon, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi.
As per the doctor, the surgery that she was needed to undergo was extremely compound due to her age and arthritis.
“The problem was compounded by the factors including her age, rheumatoid arthritis, and severely osteoporotic and weak bones. These could have been the factors which must have made doctors from other hospitals reluctant to undertake surgeries,” he said.
He further said that apart from her fracture, she was also treated for osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis using latest medication available for severe osteoporosis and involving rheumatologist.
