A 52-year-old BSNl employee died and his niece was injured when a speeding car hit them in South East Delhi’s Meethapur area on Tuesday late night. Police said the enraged onlookers set the Tata Indigo car involved in the accident on fire.

According to a senior police official, four persons from Faridabad were going towards Delhi to watch Dusshehra celebrations in the car. Out of the four, three managed to flee after the accident while one was arrested,” said a police officer.

The incident occurred around 11.30 pm on Badarpur-Tanki Road in Meethapur when Raj Mangal Singh had come with his niece Pinky, 25, at a chemist’s shop to buy some medicines for the latter.

“As they had turned around and started walking on a footpath after purchasing medicine, a speeding car hit them,” said a police officer. Singh was thrown on the road while Pinky also sustained serious injuries, said police. Singh’s relatives rushed him to nearby Apollo Hospital in an autorickshaw while Pinky was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre in an ambulance.

Singh was declared brought dead by doctors at Apollo Hospital, said police, adding Pinky has sustained injuries on her legs and abdomen and is out of danger.

After the accident, locals ran towards the car and tried to nab the driver and occupants. Three of the youths managed to flee spot whereas one Keshav Kumar, 23, was caught and handed over to the police.

The irate locals allegedly set the car on fire. “When we reached at the spot, the car was already on flame. A fire tender was called to douse the fire,” said a police officer.

A case of rash and negligent driving was registered and investigations were on, he said adding, Kumar is being questioned to find out who was behind the wheel when the accident occurred.

“We are questioning him and trying to identify other three occupants. He is not cooperating in the interrogation,” added the police officer.
