2nd cut-off dashes hopes for dream colleges

The University of Delhi hit the box office this admission season as most of the top colleges have not released their second list for the general category in several courses. Despite high cut-offs in the first list, colleges like Kirori Mal, Gargi and Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) have no place left to accommodate more students. Thus, for students who were waiting till the second list to try their luck at top colleges, there is very little hope remaining.

The cut-offs in the second list have only reduced by point percentages with most colleges declaring closed admissions. In most of the colleges the second cut-off stayed in the range of 90 to 99 per cent. However, compared to the North Campus, South Campus still has a few openings left. For BA Honours in Political Science, among the top colleges, lady Sri Ram College is the only one that is taking in students. However, the cut-off for the same is 96.50 per cent. Other than this course the BCom Programme course has seen a closure in most top colleges and is only available at Ramjas, Gargi and Kamla Nehru.

The courses with the maximum hype during the first list have not seen many takers. Three colleges had released the highest cut-off this year of 100 per cent for BSc in Computer Science. But none of the colleges managed to even fill up one fourth of its seats in the course in three days. Thus, now they have reduced their cut offs massively. The cut-off for this course in the second list at Shyama Prasad Mukherji College (SPMC) is 89.50 to 94.50 per cent now.

Other than this, Economics Honours at Hindu College saw a cut off of 99.75 per cent which was higher than even SRCC. While Hindu managed to fill up more than half of its seats for this course, the percentage has now been reduced to range between 97.25 and 98.75 per cent.

Though the second list is half empty, if there are withdrawals, colleges will open admissions again in the third list. Admissions under the second list will begin on Friday and will continue till Monday.
