Using a “jugad” motorcycle, modified from a tricycle rickshaw and impersonating a garbage collector, one smuggler, identified as Imran (21) was caught transporting illegal liquor at a picket check in Okhla round about on Sunday.

“The accused Imran used an innovative “jugad” by specially modifying a motorcycle and rickshaw and piling garbage on top of the vehicle so that no one grew  suspicious about him,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South-east district Chinmoy Biswal stated.

On-duty head constables Dharampal and Rameshwar noticed the modified rickshaw on its way towards Kalkaji at 3.50 am. The team stopped the vehicle and found that it contained 20 cartons of whiskey for sale in Haryana only. The driver gave a run but was apprehended ultimately, he said.

Sustained interrogation revealed that he acquired the consignment from a godown in Surajkund and sold them at hiked prices in Tuglakabad and Okhla, Biswal stated.

He also added that in the past few months the picket staffs have arrested several smugglers and bootleggers which had led the liquor mafia to adopt innovative ways to transport liquor. He also mentioned that Jaitpur police station had earlier nabbed two smugglers transporting liquor in washing machine cartons.
