2,000 rallies by Dec 20?

With just three more days to go, the Delhi BJP is in a big rush to achieve the target set by party national president Amit Shah of holding around 2,000 rallies by December 20 in the national Capital. In over two-and-a-half week’s time, the party has just managed to organise around 950 rallies by its various MPs. To catch up, the State unit is now arranging whirlwind rallies across constituencies in the city for the ensuing Assembly polls.

Going by the trends, it might be difficult for the party to make it to the 2,000-mark in terms of number of rallies being organised. The campaign which began from December 1 has witnessed over 60 rallies being cancelled, keeping aside the numerous controversies created by various fiery MPs. The party, till Tuesday, was through with roughly 950 rallies. It has just three more days to go and the in-charges are pulling out all the stops to meet the target.

“We prepared the schedules as per the confirmation given by various MPs. But there were several cancellations owing to their other engagements. We will make sure that the campaign ends with around 1500 rallies being held across the 70 constituencies in Delhi,” said a senior BJP member.

When BJP supremo Amit Shah, took a review meeting to chalk out its Delhi cadre’s poll preparations, he had directed to involve around 300 of its Members of Parliament. The move was aimed to connect with the people who migrated to the city from other States.

“We are planning for around 300 more rallies by MPs in the remaining three days. After December 20, we have planned a variety of new ways to campaign in the Capital,” said Praveen Shankar Kapoor, media in-charge, Delhi BJP.

The party had received a major setback when its first time MP from Uttar Pradesh and Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti created a stir with her controversial remarks. Following the huge political uproar on the issue, the city unit had stalled these rallies for almost three days. After Jyoti, it was MP Sakshi Maharaj’s comment where he called Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse a “patriot” which again attracted the fury of the public.
