A 22-year-old man succumbed to injuries at Deen Dayal Hospital on Sunday morning after he was allegedly beaten up in police custody on Wednesday last week.

Two policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, have been suspended and a departmental inquiry ordered. On June 26, Amit Singh returned to his Khayala home in an inebriated condition and had a ferocious argument with his parents. Singh's mother made a PCR call. "Sub-Inspector Anup and Constable Naveen arrived at the spot and tried to sort out their matter. But Singh started misbehaving with them and he was taken to Khayala Police Station," a senior police officer said.

The family alleged that the two officials thrashed him mercilessly and he was hospitalised. "Amit was initially admitted at Guru Gobind Hospital, where he was treated for two days. He had received several internal injuries. After medical tests, which showed severe head injuries, he was referred to DDU Hospital," the officer added.

On June 29, Singh underwent head surgery at DDU but died on Sunday morning.
