Ahead of Independence Day Delhi, the Special Cell has arrested two suspected arms dealers from different locations in national Capital with heavy arms and ammunition. The sleuths have recovered two carbines, 50 pistols and as many as cartridges from their possession.

"The accused have been identified as Mohammad Azim Shiekh, a resident of Malda in West Bengal and Aas Mohammad, a resident of Kairana in Uttar Pradesh. Aas Mohammad was arrested yesterday while Azim was arrested earlier this week," said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Special Cell.

"We had received an information that one Mohammad Azimuddin who we suspect is a key member of illegal firearms syndicate, is going to deliver a huge consignment of illegal firearms to his contact Hazi Qayum in Delhi on Wednesday.  Accordingly, a special cell team laid a trap at the vantage points near Tara Chowk in Dheerpur and around 11:55 AM the suspect was found waiting near Tara Chowk. He was carrying two trolley bags. The Police team swooped in action and nabbed Azimuddin with two automatic carbines, 38 pistols and 50 live cartridges concealed in clothes and news papers," said the DCP.

"A week ago Special cell has also nabbed Aas Mohammad from Village Singhola near GT Karnal Road who is also a key supplier of illegal arms and ammunition in National Capital. During the search of his bag 12 pistols and 19 magazines were recovered," said DCP adding that during interrogation special cell team was able to find out that the accused were involved in supplying arms to Delhi-based criminals for the last four-five years.

"The accused Azimuddin revealed that he came in touch with Akil about five years ago who lured into illegal trade of supply of illegal firearms. He started working as carrier of Akil and used to bring consignment of firearms from Malda, West Bengal on his directions and supply the same in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Whereas the second accused Aas Mohammad was lured by an arms supplier Sarvar in this illegal trade for money. He supplies the consignment of illegal pistols to his contacts on the behest of Sarvar," said DCP.

With the Independence Day round the corner, the Special Cell had earlier launched a special drive against the supply of illegal firearms in Delhi from other parts of the country and is keeping a tight vigil on the movement of arms suppliers and those with suspected terror links. "The link to supply these arms for any terror attack on Independence Day is yet not confirmed and we are further interrogating the accused.
