In order to realise her dream of becoming a model, a 19-year-old girl, along with her two friends stole cash and jewellery worth Rs 7.5 lakh from her own house in North-East Delhi's Harsh Vihar area. Police said that the incident took place on April 16 and the theft was discovered when a family member found that valuables were missing from the almirah.
"Since the door of the room was found tampered, we suspected the role of an insider. We began questioning close relatives and friends of the family and were keeping tabs on their movements.
“On getting a tip-off that one boy, Vikas, used to frequent the house of the complainant regularly, we mounted surveillance on him and eventually apprehended him," said a senior police officer.
“Vikas, a class XII student, was interogated and he told the police that the girl, also a class XII student asked him to help her in committing the theft as she needed to arrange Rs 6 lakh to realise her modeling dreams,” said DCP (North-East) AK Singla. As her parents were not supportive of her dream she planned the theft with Vikas and another friend Akshay, a law student.
Vikas confessed that the trio committed the theft after the girl gave her mother a glass of milk, laced with sedatives. later, she opened the locker with a screwdriver and stole Rs 3.08 lakh and jewellery comprising gold bangles, earrings and nose pins.
Another senior police officer said, "Her father and brother were sleeping on a separate floor, so she didn't give them any sleeping pills."
She handed over the booty to Vikas and Akshay after that. A case was registered the next day when the theft was discovered.
Vikas, who was apprehended on Tuesday night from his house in Karawal Nagar told the police that the theft had been planned by the girl since her parents were not supportive of her modeling aspirations and would not give her the money she needed for a professional photo shoot.
Police are also likely to question the girl's friend who had told her to arrange Rs 6 lakh for a photo shoot.
The stolen money and valuables have been recovered.
