112 steel pickling units in a pickle as pollution watchdog pulls plug on power

Staff Reporter

Having taken serious note of the violation of environmental regulations, the Delhi Government’s pollution watchdog has ordered a shutdown 112 stainless steel pickling industries running in Wazirpur Industrial area.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has ordered Tata Power Delhi Distribution limited (TPDDl) and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to cut power and water supply to 112 stainless steel pickling units with immediate effect. It has also directed North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) to cancel their factory licence and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate has been directed to seal the unit. These industrial units are allegedly discharging untreated waste water into the sewers. The waste water doesn’t reach the common effluent treatment plant (CETP) as the sewerage system is broken. What is more of a concern is that the untreated “acidic discharge” may be polluting the groundwater and the Yamuna. A survey by the pollution watchdog found all drains blocked due to silt from the industries and that metallic silt from pickling units was being discharged into stormwater drains.
