North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) served show-cause notices to 103 air-polluting industries in Beadonpura and Regar Pura in central Delhi, asking them to vacate the premises within 48 hour or face action.
These units were identified in a survey carried out by NMC to identify such industries, a senior NMC official said.
The action came after four people were charred to death inside a narrow cloth laundering unit in Beadonpura area of Karol Bagh recently.
Probe by the Delhi Police has revealed that the four unfortunate souls just could not come out to safety as the exit door of the unit was too narrow.
Taking similar action against these industries, the civic body following the direction of the Supreme Court had taken action against 12, 305 factories in which 690 were sealed and remaining were found closed.
The official said that the licensing team of North Corporation sealed 124 units in Ashoka park area of Karol Bagh zone earlier this week. “It had also sealed 516 factories in Shahbad Daulatpur, Prahladpur and Pooth Khurd for running factories in non-conforming areas earlier this year. Besides, 297 factories and warehouses dealing in products such as plastic, rubber and chemicals were also sealed in Mundka, Kamruddin Nagar, Nilothi, Swarn Park, Tikari Kalan and Ghevra, he said.
Many such units in these areas are still in operation running businesses in extremely small premises, which are mostly stuffed with goods, no ventilation and not equipped with prescribed safety measures.
Most of the buildings do not have a sanction plan and have illegally added a third or a fourth floor to the already existing structure.
The official said the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) had provided a list of such polluting units running in residential areas.
There are over 10,000 such units operating from such areas and action was taken after a list of these units was provided by the DSIIDC, he said.
