There has been a sharp rise in the cases of vehicle theft with 14,705 FIRs of auto theft having already been filed on e-police station of the Delhi Police since April last. The figure has turned out to be a wake-up call for the cops as almost 100 vehicles have been stolen every day in the national Capital. This figure is excluding the thefts registered at various police stations. The facility of registering an FIR of auto-theft through online was started by the Delhi Police in April last year.

Of total 14,331 cases filed through online facility on the Delhi Police’s website, highest 2,415 cases were reported from the West district. However, highly-protected New Delhi district recorded just 90 such cases, lowest among the 11 districts.

Data available with the Delhi Police has revealed that a total of 2,152 cases from East, 2,011 from North-East, 1,071 from North-West, 1,558 from Outer, 1,491 from South-East, 1,334 from South and 816 from South-West were reported at e-police station till September, 2015.

Police officials cite huge number of vehicles on road as  one of the reasons behind the increase in number of thefts in the city. A section from the police also believe that none of the cases is being investigated as it is just a paper formality for the people to get their vehicle’s insurance claim.

Complaints are being lodged through mobile or web any time anywhere without going to police stations as the e-police station have jurisdiction all over NCT of Delhi.

The e-police station is looked after by the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch. Five FIRs were registered on the first day of its launch.
