A 10-year-old girl allegedly attempted suicide with a 24-year-old man by jumping in front of a train near Narela railway station in Rohini, on the day of Rakshabandhan. Police said while the man had his both legs severed in the accident, the girl also sustained critical injuries, but both escaped death.
Both had gone on record saying that they were in love and wanted to get married despite her age or her family's opposition. Police meanwhile are looking at it as "just an accident".
According to the police, the matter was reported late on Monday, when locals spotted the duo that had jumped in front of a moving train allegedly to commit suicide. When the locals alerted the police the duo was taken to a hospital and both were identified to be living near each other's residence in Narela area. Their families were approached and were informed about the matter.
"Primary probe has revealed that the girl and the man were known to each other for past few months. Their statement will be recorded once they are in a stable condition. Family of the girl has also alleged that their girl was taken by the man to the railway track. However, efforts to ascertain the allegations are being made," said a senior police officer. Police are questioning the family members of the girl to know more and CCTV footages from the vicinity are also being checked.
