The victory of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the DBS PG College here has come as a face saver for the organisation which is reeling under successive loses in the student union elections in the colleges of the State. In the elections held on Saturday, Yogesh Ghaghat brought cheers on the sullen faces of ABVP leaders when he defeated Ajay Pushpan of Jai Badri Jai Kedar group by a margin of 457 votes in the election for the post of President of students union.

This victory of the ABVP is significant as its candidates were able to win in the college after a gap of three years. Apart from it, the victory broke the losing streak of ABVP in different colleges of Dehradun and state capital.

The candidates of National Students Union of India (NSUI) have so far been on a winning spree in the State. They had swept all posts that were at stake in the MKP PG college and SGRR PG college. Their candidates had also won in student union elections held in other colleges of state like Johnpur and Thatyud Government colleges. Interestingly in the DBS PG college, the NSUI was not able to field its candidate due to revolt by its leaders. It ensured the victory for ABVP in the college. The victory has also soothed the nerves of its leaders ahead of the crucial elections of the DAV PG College.

The election in the biggest college of the State is scheduled on August 31. DAV PG College is considered as a formidable citadel of ABVP as its candidates have won the prestigious post of its President in last ten year consecutively. This year Shubham Simalti is the candidate of ABVP while NSUI has fielded Vikas Negi. Sensing its chances in the DAV PG College, the state unit of Congress party has also thrown its weight behind NSUI in its endeavour to capture the DAC PG College, the stronghold of ABVP. The state party chief Pritam Singh met the student leaders on Saturday and gave them valuable tips.
