The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) is organising a two-day workshop on the modern perspective in Himalayan geosciences on June 11-12. The workshop is being organised as part of the celebration of the Golden Jubilee year of Indian Geophysical Union (IGU).

The workshop will be inaugurated by National Disaster Management Authority member Prof Harsh Kumar Gupta who will also deliver the inaugural address.

Other invited dignitaries include IGU president Prof VP Dimri, National Geophysical Research Institute director Prof Mrinal Sen and over 75 delegates from various institutions and universities including IITs, Delhi University, Kumaun University, Kurukshetra University, Indian Statistical Institute, Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, Banaras Hindu University etc.

The workshop aims to provide platform to the Himalayan geoscientists to deliberate upon the new developments in the geoscience of this orogenic belt. The focus of the workshop will be on recent geophysical and geological researches in understanding Himalayan evolution.

Key issues like understanding through geophysical parameters the lithospheric structure and tectonic fabric of Himalaya, lithotectonic evolution of its various belts,  the landform development, shallow subsurface processes and neotectonic actively, paleoclimatic variations in Himalaya and geoscience for the society, have received global attention whereby significant new data has poured in lately.

The two days workshop will include about 85 technical presentations by eminent scientists and young researchers. The Indian National Science Academy president Prof Krishan lal will deliver Prince Mukarram Jah Endowment lecture on Tuesday.

The IGU is an association of Indian scientific community that advances through cooperation in research and understanding of earth and space for the benefit of humanity. It is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in geosciences. The IGU was formally inaugurated by Prof Humayun Kabir, the then Minister for Cultural Affairs and Scientific Research in 1963.
