While speaking of the sensitive issue of Triple Talaq that has triggered a severe row in the Indian society and politics being heard now in the Supreme Court, Subhashini Ali, a senior CPI(M) leader and former MP said that such regressive practice is not present in Islam alone. “The women from all religious persuasions are at the receiving end of such antediluvian practice.
There are such laws in every religion apart from Islam which help perpetuation of discrimination against the women. They hardly enjoy equal rights with the male members,” she said while addressing a congregation comprising social workers and law interns from law universities based across the country at the RlEK Auditorium in Dehradun on Saturday.
“As far as Triple Talaq is concerned it is a form of divorce practised in India, whereby a Sunni Muslim man can legally divorce his wife by pronouncing talaq (the Arabic word for divorce) three times. However, I am convinced that a court is not entitled to scrap it by judicial order,” she said while replying to a question on the role of the Supreme Court with the defenders terming it as inherent in the Islamic tenets. “The best the court can do is to send some recommendatory order meant to modify some provisions of the custom,” she said.
She said that some reforms must be made in the society. “However, the political parties lack the spunk to do this,” she said, adding that there is a number of Sati temples in Bundelkhand and Rajasthan which are standing as glorification of the barbaric practice abolished long back.
