A fight between a tusker and a leopard proved fatal for the big cat in the jungles of Gaula here on the weekend. The tusker is reported to have fatally trampled the leopard during the confrontation between the two wild animals.

According to information from official sources, on Friday evening a tusker moving about in the jungles of Gaula and Dauli had a confrontation with a leopard in the jungles of Gaula about two and half kilometres from the lalkuan exit gate of the Gaula riverbed.

The struggle which is reported to have lasted for quite some time saw the tusker trampling the big cat which was a male and about four years in age. Such was the jumbo’s assault that the body of the leopard was found to be torn into two parts.

During the morning on the weekend, forest guards Dhan Singh Adhikari and Dharmanand Pathak came upon the body of the big cat while on a patrol and informed their seniors about their find.

The sub divisional forest officer Dhruv Singh Martoliya and forest ranger Ganesh Chandra Tripathi reached the site and got veterinarians from lalkuan to conduct the post mortem examination after which the body was destroyed.

The forest ranger said that considering the broken bushes in the area, it is likely that the struggle between the elephant and the leopard must have lasted some time. The tusker believed to be involved in the incident is often seen in the jungles of Gaula and Dauli, he added.
