We want to ensure defeat of BSP: SP

Cut your coat according to your cloth. The adage suits to the Uttarakhand Samajwadi Party (SP) most at present, since the SP cut its coat, the term ‘cloth’ may be referred to as party’s position in the State for local body polls by not fielding its candidate for Dehradun Municipal Corporation. The party, however, claimed that it was done to stop its arch rival the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) from gaining success.

State president Satyanarayan Sachan said, “We want to ensure defeat of the BSP. The presence of SP candidate would extend problems for the BSP candidate. So we decided not to field our candidate.” He defined it a well calculated political move that would get desired results.

State leadership said it was least bothered about the victory of the BJP and the Congress. “No matter, whether the Congress or the BJP wins the Mayor election. But we would not let the BSP win the polls. By not fielding our candidate, we have started for our campaign,” Sachan said.

Though he accepted that party didn’t tread well during last Assembly elections, he claimed that the party’s graph in the State increased in recent past. The party would do better in the civil polls. He claimed that in several municipal councils and town areas, the party would come out with shining colours.

It is altogether a different matter that the party has struggled to find candidates for the several municipal councils and municipality, let alone for the post of Mayor in Dehradun. Asked if he didn’t find candidate for the Mayoral poll, he said, “It was not so. There were many contenders. But we didn’t field any of them for certain reasons.”

He also left query related to number of candidates expressed interest to contest Mayoral poll on the SP ticket. He, however, claimed that the SP would improve its tally.
