VIP visits to U'khand: Govt to purchase jammers soon

MANOJ KUMAR

If everything goes as planned, the State Government will purchase jammers for strengthening security during rallies by VIPs and their arrival in Uttarakhand.

As of now, the State Government has to seek jammers from neighbouring States including Uttar Pradesh through the Central Government if any political leaders reach Uttarakhand. As large numbers of VIPs are expected to reach Uttarakhand for public rallies for the forthcoming lok Sabha election, so the State Government has decided to purchase jammers soon at an expected cost of `1 crore.

Additional Director General of Police (law and Order) Ram Singh Meena said that the police department had sent a proposal for purchase of jammers to the State Government. In absence of this equipment, the department requests Uttar Pradesh Government for jammers through Home Ministry. Jammers are used to prevent use of communication devices. Jammers help in blocking electronic networks including mobile phones and remote controls to bombs in the radius of around two kilometres, he added.

Another police officer said that various political leaders like Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and other leaders of various parties who have always been high on the terrorist target list are expected to visit various parts of the State for addressing public rallies for the forthcoming lok Sabha election.
