Two held with 12 quintals of spurious mawa

PNS

Dehradun police nabbed two persons with 12 quintals of spurious mawa here on Friday.

The spurious mawa was being transported in sacks piled under vegetables in a jeep. The seizure on Friday has once again confirmed that large quantities of spurious food items are smuggled from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh to Dehradun and other parts of Uttarakhand during festive season for use in sweets and other food items. During the checking drive which was being conducted in Clement Town area police noticed a pickup coming towards Dehradun from the direction of Saharanpur. While the checking the vehicle, police found few sacks kept under vegetables inside the vehicle. On further checking police found many quintals of spurious mawa inside the sacks.

On further investigation the two men transporting the consignment said that they were on their way to deliver 12 quintals of spurious mawa sourced from Muzzafarnagar to Niranjanpur in Dehradun. It should be mentioned here that sale of adulterated food items peaks during various festivals. The authorities conduct checks and sampling drives during such times. Though those smuggling the spurious items are periodically nabbed, so far little action has been taken against those selling adulterated food items in the State capital.
