Although the officials of the Regional Transport Office are regularly claim to be making all possible efforts to spread awareness regarding road safety and traffic norms during the ongoing Road Safety Week, still the local transporters were very openly witnessed flouting traffic norms in the State capital during this week which concluded on Friday.
The local city bus operators were seen violating most of the norms stated in the Motor Vehicle Act. Rash driving, bus drivers and conductors not wearing uniforms, not issuing tickets to the passengers, overloading, misbehaving with passengers, mixing drink and drive and even overcharging some commuters were the common violations which the authorities failed to act against. Similarly, the Vikram tempo operators also flouted various traffic norms by driving without the route permit and overloading.
However, as per ARTO (Enforcement), RP Rathore as many as 70 challans were imposed during the Road Safety Week against different kind of traffic violations including overloading, riding without helmet, talking on mobile while driving, driving without seat belt, rash driving and others. Observers opine that the authorities have restricted their role to holding formal programmes, checking documents of vehicle users and issuing challans without taking stringent action against traffic violation. Political interference is considered to be a major reason for the lack of effective action against violations by public transport vehicles.
