Instead of expecting the authorities to ensure the protection of every girl and woman in the country, it is more practical to train and empower the women in self defence. With this idea in mind, the Shiv Sena distributed Nanchaku to about 50 girls to commemorate the 121st birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose and 91st birth anniversary of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray at the Gandhi Park here on Tuesday.
Presiding over the programme commemorated as ‘Nari Swabhiman Diwas’, the Shiv Sena state chief Gaurav Kumar said that the two tower personalities (Bose and Thackeray) born on this day had given a different direction to the nation and society. “They had worked to make the public aware and taught the people to fight against wrongs. While Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose formed the Azad Hind Fauj to fight external enemies of the nation, Bal Thackeray formed the Shiv Sena to fight the internal enemy. At a time when the ‘Beti Padhai Beti Bachao’ slogan seems more akin to a warning, the Shiv Sena believes in training the girls to empower them for defending themselves when needed.
It is for this purpose that the Shiv Sena has been providing free of cost training to girls in self defence techniques at its party office in Dehradun for about two years now,” he said.
The Shiv Sena district chief Amit Karnwal opined that the government doesn’t seem to have any concrete measures for ensuring the safety of women. The Shiv Sena will assist the women wanting to become empowered to defend themselves, he added.
The party’s city chief Ashish Singhal, its sports cell city chief Mohammed Fareed and others were also present on the occasion.
