Traffic situation continues to deteriorate in Dehradun

PNS

With the authorities focusing on facilitating a smooth and incident-free Vidhan Sabha election 2017, the situation of traffic has continued to deteriorate in the provisional state capital Dehradun. Whereas in the past traffic jams used to occur mainly during protest rallies and other processions in town, the clogging of traffic on city roads has now become a routine affair.  With schools being closed for the winter break there is some respite from the afternoon traffic jam which occurs daily during the closing time of schools. Observers point out that though the authorities have taken measures like construction of two flyovers, one pedestrian over-bridge and other steps, the traffic flow in Dehradun has not yet shown the positive effects of such efforts. While the two flyovers inaugurated in the recent past have still remained controversial for many due to various alleged anomalies and purported flaws in its design and construction, the pedestrian foot over-bridge constructed at Tehsil Chowk has proved to be a major failure with pedestrians shunning it, preferring to cross the road to the detriment of the traffic flow and their own safety. Once known for its greenery, clean air and peaceful ambiance, Dehradun has undergone a drastic deterioration and the situation continues to exacerbate with the police and various other departments concerned failing to take the coordinated action required to resolve problems like traffic congestion, opine observers.
