Tharali MLA Munni Devi Shah has resigned from the post of the Chamoli district Panchayat president. Her resignation was approved by the Governor Baby Rani Maurya. A case regarding her occupying two offices of profit simultaneously was also being heard in the High Court of Uttarakhand.
The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Tharali, Munni Devi was elected to the seat after the demise of her husband and previous MLA Magan Lal Shah. After she took oath of office and secrecy as the Tharali MLA, the Chamoli district Panchayat vice president Lakhpat Singh Butola had taken over charge as the Panchayat head though the Government did not approve of this.
Since then, the Tharali MLA was also handling the charge of the Chamoli district Panchayat president.
Later, the district Panchayat vice president filed a petition in the high court questioning Munni Devi’s occupying two offices of profit simultaneously. In the petition, he had stated that after her election as the Tharali MLA, the post of the Chamoli district Panchayat president had become vacant and he had taken over charge as per the Panchayati Raj Act.
However, the State Government had not approved of this.
