The teachers should keep updating their knowledge and skills by reading good books and also inspire their students to read, said the Governor of Uttarakhand, Krishan Kant Paul while speaking at ‘Governor’s teacher’s day award’ at Raj Bhawan on Monday. Underlining the need of training for teachers, the Governor said that continuous training is needed to upgrade knowledge and skills. He said that in these days when parents are mostly working and children get less time to interact with them; teachers had assumed a role perhaps even more important than parents.

“Teachers must create an atmosphere in their schools where children can imbibe Indian values and culture to keep our heritage alive. Education without values has no meaning. In this era, when nuclear families are the rule, children sometimes have no way of linking themselves to their roots and cultural heritage. Here, teachers can step in to impart these values to the youngsters,’’ he quipped. The governor added that the teachers must ensure that the youth power is channelized in the right direction to help in nation building.

He expressed happiness at the improvement in the examination results of Uttarakhand board since last year and hoped that the teaching standards would witness further improvement. Greeting the teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ day and Ganesh Chaturthi, the Governor said that this was an occasion for thanking all the teachers of the country whose consistent efforts have placed the country on the path of progress.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister of Uttarkhand, Harish Rawat said that other teachers of state should get inspiration from these outstanding teachers.  He said that the primary school result have shown an improvement of 3 percent while in secondary level this improvement is four percent. Rawat exhorted the teachers to take this improvement to ten percent. The CM said that in this era of competition, we must focus more on our human resource   which can be improved only by teachers. He claimed that the state government is committed to resolve the problems of the teachers.

Congratulating the teachers honoured with the Governor’s award, the chief minister said that he was happy to see that most of the awardees are women and teachers from  schools located in remote areas. Education minister Mantri Prasad Naithani said that if India wants to regain the old glory of being a Vishwaguru then it would require important contribution from teachers. He suggested that awards should be instituted in the names of world renowned Indian Rishis and scholars.

Twenty six teachers – two from each district- of government schools of state were honored on the occasion.  The award included a cash prize of Rs 10000, citation and a collection of books. The Chief Secretary Shatrughna Singh, additional Chief Secretary Ranbir Singh and officers of education department were present on the occasion.
