The students of Roorkee College of Engineering were thrilled to share their views with the representatives of district police and medical department on Tuesday during a symposium organised by the college authorities.

Taking note of the rising problem of drug addiction amongst the youths, especially residential students in technical colleges, CO Roorkee, Deputy CMO and administrative officials from Vikas Nagar gave tips to the students on steps to keep drug addictions at bay and how to build strong character.

Speaking to The Pioneer, the director of the college Dr S K Saini said, “Sometimes it is hard to pacify the girl students when they demand equal rights to stay out late evening as boys. From safety point of view, I always tell them that prevention is better than cure. In the series of motivational talks, the rising problem of drug addiction amongst students was discussed threadbare.”

Additional chief medical officer Dr Manish Dutta asked the students of BTech course if any of them had the habit of holding pencil in fingers while studying. Saying that it could be the beginning of the habit of smoking, he asked them to change their habit. He also cited example of his course-mate in medical college who had later developed the habit of smoking 50 cigarettes a day and developed lung cancer.

He gave them tips on  how to keep addiction at bay.

The CO Roorkee Swapna Kishore Singh said, “The real test of a person is only when he is extra- ordinary in normal life. It demands a lot of sacrifice to maintain the qualities in one’s life. If one performs his assigned role rightly, he is a karma yogi.”

He also extolled the students to be open and transparent so that they could vent out their feelings when in distress and not take the path of drugs which gives them the sense of guilt.

Administrative officer rural development from Vikas Nagar Pushpendra Tyagi encouraged the students with his poetic verses on life and career. Sunil Pundir from department of police Dehradun also shared his experiences and asked them to build strong character.
