A day after a suspected member of terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, Danish Ahmed — a third-year student of BSc at Doon PG College of Agriculture, Science and Technology in Dehradun — surrendered before police at Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir, he admitted on Friday during interrogation that he had been in constant touch with the Hizbul terrorists based in south Kashmir through social media.
Informing, the State Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Ram Singh Meena said on Friday that Danish had further said he had become a terrorist on their instigation. Another senior police officer said, "As per the information we received from Jammu and Kashmir police, Danish was given the task to 'activate' some local youths in North Kashmir to carry out terror strikes to make the region as much disturbed as south Kashmir."
Meena further said his friends are on the radar of the intelligence officials. "Police and intelligence officials are trying to collect all the information related to Danish Ahmad and his friends," he said.
Moreover, Dehradun senior superintendent of police Nivedita Kukreti said on Friday that the district police have issued instructions to the authorities of school/colleges to conduct verification of their students belonging to various states, including Jammu and Kashmir, and submit the reports to the police stations concerned.
"Earlier such instructions had been given to the institutes concerned, but a fresh reminder has been issued to them in view of the antecedents of Danish as a Hizbul terrorist having coming to the fore," she added.
Notably, Danish, a resident of Kulgam village in Handwara, presently studying in Dehradun, came on the lens of the intelligence sleuths after a video showing him wearing a battle pouch with a grenade at the funeral of the dreaded terrorist Sabzar Bhat had also gone viral on social media in Kashmir. It is learnt that he was first picked up by police in 2006 for his involvement in stone pelting. But he was let off after counselling in view of his educational career.
Police sources said that Danish had been admitted at Doon PG College in 2014. On May 25, he had appeared in his third semester examination. But he had missed his examination slated on May 27 as he had gone to Srinagar on the night of May 25.
