Adhering to the nationwide call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 2500 students of Shiv Dale school not only pledged to abstain from using single use plastic but also distributed paper bags they had made to shopkeepers.
The students visited shops in local markets in groups convincing the people not to use polythene bags on Friday.
A student, Shuchi Negi said, “We all know that use of polythene bags and plastic bottles is damaging the environment but still we are using it. We are trying to convince whomsoever we meet to use paper bags while telling them about damage caused by plastic bottles and polythene bags to environment and health.”
All children and their teachers decided to use metal water bottles in schools. Students also distributed kullads to the vendors selling tea and cold drinks. School principal Kiran Sharma said, “Research study suggests that all plastics may leach chemicals if they are scratched or heated.
At certain exposure levels, some of the chemicals in these products may cause cancer in people. Plastic bottle chemical is linked to heart disease as well.
It is said that the plastic bags we use daily take up to 1,000 years to decompose, while plastic bottles can take 450 years or more.”
