Students against bottling plant in varsity land

The student fraternity and alumni of Doon University have strongly condemned the decision of the State Government to hand over the university’s proposed construction site for establishing a Coca Cola bottling plant at Chharba.

University alumnus and DAV PG College visiting assistant professor Mukesh Devrari said that the land in question was allotted to Doon University in 2006, but the recent Government decision makes it appear as if it is working in the interest of corporate instead of the long term interests of society.

“Student community of Doon University is not against industrialisation and urbanisation per se but it has to be regulated with the consultation of all stakeholders. We demand that Uttarakhand be developed as an educational hub but not simply by converting private colleges into universities.

The Government must build five State research universities each in Garhwal and Kumaon on the lines of JNU. Only masters, MPhil and PhD courses should be conducted in these institutions,” said Devrari adding that to protest against the ‘unscrupulous’ policies of the State Government, members of the student fraternity are planning to take out a rally from the Doon University to the Clock Tower.
