Taking a cue from Gujarat, the medical health and family welfare department of Uttarakhand has decided to undertake sting operations to nab those involved in prenatal sex determination.
In an order directed to Chief Medical Officers ( CMO) of all districts, the additional director National Programme and State nodal officer for PCPNDT Act enforcement, Dr Saroj Naithani said Asha workers, ANMs and people associated with medical profession should be authorised to conduct sting operations. Under the leadership of designated medical officers, preparation for decoy operations for the sting should be made and persons giving information should be monetarily rewarded.
She, however, added that before the sting operations, an awareness campaign in the districts should be launched in which people should be warned about the consequences if they opt for pre natal sex determination under the PCPNDT Act. Dr Naithani said that information about the provisions of the PCPNDT Act and its legal implications should be pasted prominently at all Government and private hospitals as well as Ultrasound centres.
